Summary:
Windows 7 is a re-working of Windows Vista® so there should be little disruption. We expect some of your software drivers will need to be updated. More demands will be placed on your hardware and network, especially memory. Check your configurations carefully especially if you are part of a large network since your security software may not be ready to protect your workstation. Ask your network administrator before installing Windows 7. You could be in for a bit of work to get your system ready, even for computers running Windows Vista even on relatively new systems (last two years).
Your existing Internet Security 2010 version software should work just fine. See the Norton list of which programs are Windows 7 ready. Should you acquire Windows 7, check in advance for a special upgrade with your security software vendor. We will report back on our findings with Norton Internet Security 2010 once we have tested it after going through a Vista Premium upgrade to Windows 7.

Advice:
Check to make sure your Antivirus, Internet Security or Advanced software is compatible with Windows 7. Take a look at the listing provided by Microsoft. One of the reasons to check is most 2009 versions did not have the benefit of testing in advance, since there has been some changes to the security provided with the operating system (See sidebar) . Many network versions for small and large business operations are not declaring compatibility, yet. Though as the number of workstations grow with Windows 7, more problems will crop up.

Do not count on Windows 7 to provide a higher level of security than its predecessors. Recent tests on the UAC feature showed it was ineffective after numerous pieces of malware. This reinforces our view that operating system software by its design is not adept at fighting intrusions. If anything, they were programmed to work with and manage outside application software and the computer/ network which makes them open to abuse by intentionally designed malware. We suggest implementing your own form of protection with antivirus and internet security and network software that can react to new threats, work proactively and counter existing and changing vulnerabilities.
